A Fresh Start for Marsue
(...continued from home page...)
Not wanting to see her on the streets, the police took Marsue to a local emergency shelter. But the time she could stay there was limited, so they referred her to Wheeler Mission’s Center for Women & Children where she could receive the help she needed to get back on her feet.
Marsue’s first stop was to meet with her assigned case manager. While her needs were being assessed, Marsue took part in life-skills and spiritual classes and had the opportunity to learn more about our long-term programs.
Marsue decided to become part of our Fresh Start/Working Guest Program, a six-month course designed to help women become independent through job placement or job training.
The goal was to get Marsue into safe, affordable housing within six months. During her time here, she also received training in our computer lab and took classes in math, human relations and good work habits. “Taking classes here was great,” she says. “I learned a lot.” One of her favorite classes was Nutrition. “I learned how to feed myself right instead of just eating what I wanted.”
While Marsue wasn’t able to find a job due to a medical condi¬tion, she did qualify for disability. Staying at Wheeler enabled her to save enough money to get her own apartment.
This winter, Marsue is safe and warm in her own home. And, as spring rolls around, she’ll be returning to Wheeler to volunteer and help others.
Thanks to the support of friends like you, women like Marsue have a safe place to go where they can get the help they so urgently need!
